Volume Control/Icon is gone (Ubuntu 10.04)

Print
Q. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), my volume control is missing. How can I get it back?

A. 1. Right-click on the panel where you'd like the volume controller to appear and select "Add to panel"
2. Choose "Indicator Applet" from the list and click on "Add" and you're done. The volume control should be back.

This also works for Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)

Enable Volume control and playing any sound file
149 Saturday, 02 February 2013 06:04
Alex Ramani V
I have a problem in my laptop. My laptop is working on the ubuntu 10.04 OS.

I changed my login from 'administrator' to 'root'. Now, my login through 'administrator' is also not working.

Recently, I'm not able to hear any sound while playing any sound file.
I do not hear even the star-up sound.

The volume control icon is showing 'mute'mode. I'm unable to set it right. I tried all the tips like
System>Preferences>Startup Applications.
Click +Add, then input:
Name: Volume Control
Command: gnome-volume-control-applet
Comment: Launch volume control applet

Please, help to solve these problems.
Looking forward to a working reply.

Argh!
What is this garbage? The indicator plugin is unconfigurable and contains two buttons which are completely unrelated to the volume control. I don't want them and I don't need them and I want to remove them, but the plugin doesn't have a properties dialog!

Besides, the volume slider is not vertical, completely opposite to the idiom. Does this mean that Xfce is going the way of Gnome and enforcing stupid defaults that you can't turn off.

FFS, I switched away from Gnome and KDE PRECISELY to avoid such UI-fascism! Do I need to go back to fvwm now?

I don't like the new system. You have to remove(/install) packages to configure indicators icons. The different users on a same computer can't make a individual choice!!!

Thanks! I didn't know the vol control has been grouped into a applet. I know now why it is gone -- it got lost when I tried to remove the mail icon.
Now it's back. It bundled with mail icon, power icon, bluetooth icon and ibus together and looks like they are double spaced.
Just... WHY?!?
21 Thursday, 20 May 2010 16:28

I don't have such a problem with the mail icon being there, but all the icons seem to be double spaced. It looks really bad. Also, I use a netbook, so my space is quite limited.

there is all to few applets to choose from in the listing and this is a perfect example on when they are badly done. Why do I have to have a mail or chatt applet to change my sound? Wheres the logic?

how to add to a "full panel"
13 Tuesday, 11 May 2010 15:46
Ehud Gavron
You can do it in two ways to find that space...

1. Close all running applications. Click where the application taskbar icon is and follow the instructions above.

or

2. Switch to a second desktop where you have nothing running.

When done adding it to the panel, right click the "Indicator Applet" and select "move", then move the mouse to position it where you want it. Left click to release.

RE: Email icon

Ant
I have no idea how to remove the email icon. As far as I know, its an "indicator" icon - so notifications can be from pidgin, evolution, empathy, gwibber or whatever else that uses GTK, Gnome and any form of communication. So I don't think you can remove it. :-(

emptiness
mine disappeared too.
there seems to be no way to right click the panel in ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix, as there is no chance to click between the different icons, as there is no space between them. tried for like 10 min. anything else i can do to get back an applet for volume control?

and why tie it to evolution? this seems a bit nuts to me.
disappeared when I removed the email icon

I don't use evolution, so I remove the email icon from the panel, was a separate icon until 9.10, but now I'll have to keep it if I want the volume control to show. No big deal, thanks for your help.

Brought back my volume, thanks!

But any idea how to remove the "Mail" icon, but keep the volume one? They seem to be tied together

I don't know why it disappeared. From what I've heard it was planned - just like the control (maximize, minimize, etc) buttons moving to the left.
Thanks

Yup, that worked. Any ideas why it might have disappeared in the upgrade process? Not spotted in testing?
