dos2unix missing (Ubuntu 10.04)

Print

Yet another "feature" from the developers of ubuntu to simplify life. "dos2unix" and "unix2dos" are missing in version 10.04 (Lucid).

First of all, install dos2unix package:

sudo aptitude install tofrodos

Then if you want "dos2unix" type "fromdos" and if you want "unix2dos", type "todos". If you have a habit of typing in the old commands, its best to create links.

Go to /usr/bin:

username@linuxbox:/usr/bin# sudo ln -s fromdos dos2unix
username@linuxbox:/usr/bin# sudo ln -s todos unix2dos

more easy and dos not need root privilages is to create a file ~/.bash_aliases with follow content:

alias dos2unix=fromdos
alias unix2dos=todos

Well, I know I'm late to fest but I have to add my 2C. Imagine how frustrating is to work on maintaining what other have done long time ago. So guess, what if I put my name on an old thing. Exciting !!! No?
Ubuntu is missing somebody like Linus with an ironfist to maintain little guys in line. :)
No help for me, alas...

I was trying to install makehuman-nightly build but can't because it DEPENDS on the PACKAGE "dos2unix" so that "apt-get" fails even after applying this patch.

Glad it worked for some, though. As for me, I must seek elsewhere.
Thanks for the poke in the eye...

One trouble newbies face is hearing "you should KNOW that" a lot. We study and practice to reduce the frequency of hearing it, but suspect that--no matter how much we learn--the unix masters are "changing the game" so we'll never catch up.

Thanks for demonstrating our suspicion was right.
Dont cry so much,

u always can make an alias in Your .bashrc just for convenience:
alias dos2unix='fromdos'
alias unix2dos='todos'
and U do not have to change Your habits..

...but it's the "fixing stuff which already works" which is part of the open source culture -- and ultimately leads to innovation and great new features. So try and have a little patience with this kind of thing, even though it can be trying. :)

WTF do you guys think !!

you have a great kernel, and you guys are just trashing the reputation of open source software by making dumb and unmanaged decisions when you build distributions

you think you want to name a program differently, create an alias if you really need to, but please leave the old ones properly named.

i'm more used to freebssd than linux. believe me, sysadmin under linux is an endless pain when it comes to portability, just because of such foolish decisions, renaming thing, changing flags, just because you think you know better.

it is easier to build a script portable on any solaris and any BSD than to make the same one between two versions of the same linux distribution, not to mention the exact same version on different architectures or even the same version installed a week after on the same machine !!
Thank you so much

Mr. Hahn
WTF was wrong with the dos2unix and unix2dos nomenclature? There are plenty of other programs with "2" in the filename.. seemed conventional. What if someone has a "to-do" list that they want to name "todos"? Jesus, do you developers ever think? This kind of jack-assery goes right along with naming your server "sAsInSea.idiotdevelopers.org" or "requestTimedOut.buttmunchers.com". It was great the old way.. for YEARS. And now it sucks. Congratulations for making me 99.999% less productive on the simple task of converting a file from dos to unix.

Up yours truly,
The Great Mr. Hahn
