Install Gnome in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot)

Print

ubuntu-logo-smHere we go again. A new version of Ubuntu is out and if you still don't want to switch from it because of Unity, you are welcome to try and install Gnome. (I didn't try removing or disabling Unity this time, but you are welcome to).

Keep in mind that the new gnome leaves a lot to be desired (like that clock in the middle of the screen) and will take some time to get used to (not as much as Unity though).

Steps:

1. Open shell and run:

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

2. Once installed, you have to reboot.

3. After the reboot, on the login window select Gnome classic

ubuntu 11.10 login sm

I'm programmer and Unity just doesn't work for me. It freezes a lot, I can't bear how it's slow. I'm changing back to KDE.
Thanks

I had installed Gnome 3 on another computer in the past after going beserk on Unity but I forgot the command. Now I'm installing another computer for professional usage so I'll be needing this again. Unity is a definite no-no. What were they thinking at Canonical. They still fail to see that Unity is scaring people away from Ubuntu. I assume they were following some smooth talking marketing boy who preached Unity was the new holy grail.

i have a gaming laptop and a netbook which i carry around with me. Unity works great and I have now gotten used to it on my gaming laptop. But now on my net book is a whole different story. it would be great if they came out with a lighter version.

Ubuntu has really been screwed by Unity. It makes any practical use of Ubuntu in a work or development environment non-existent.

Somebody register saveubuntu.com or an equivalent and lets all put up a public poll, get noticed, and stick it in the Ubuntu developers face.

I would be willing to help out with creating the site and hosting it on my server as I am sure would others.

I'm installing Debian instead of Ubuntu now, and I found that I had been giving Canonical way too much credit -- everything that I liked about Ubuntu is in Debian and it's more stable. I just googled this page as I reminder how to turn off Unity on an Ubuntu machine I'm still running. (It's making remote desktop really slow !)

Im looking for something else, hope to god the other distros dont jump on this BS bandwagon. Im using Debian for the momment.

Thanks so much for this tip. I thought my computer was to slow for the new cup of beans but after checking on the requirements found out it was just fine. Overqualified actually. Thought I would have to go back to 11.04 and that would of been a lot of work. Excellent tip. I owe you one. Thanks again.

Need I say more about UNITY? Well I don't have to but I'll add that the GUI and the MOUSE revolutionized computers but the Ubuntu people decided it's time to move back to the "command line" interface with UNITY! Welcome to the 80's!

Upgraded to New Ubuntu, now I have NO BLUETOOTH DEVICES, NO SOUND, NO LAN and therefor NO INTERNET. Apart from unnecessarily filling otherwise usable disk space this operating system has no useful function.

The Commodore "VIC 20" would be a technological advancement over Ubuntu 11.10!

Canonical has become preoccupied with herding users to their music store, 'ubuntu one' and their other commercial enterprises. Thats why they've dumbed down the interface. Popularity has gone to their head. They seem to forget that didnt invent this gnu/linux operating system, they just put it together. Seem to remember Red Hat doing this too... Time to find a new distro.

God spare me from these *sshole developers who take a great product and decide to completely rearrange it based on focus groups with Homer Simpson-esque morons.

Imagine an auto maker deciding, hey I'll put the steering wheel in the back seat, the glove compartment outside, I'll hide the stereo under the gas tank, and not put any of this in the user's manual so my new customers can figure it out for themselves!

Did Homer Simpson tell the Ubuntu 11.10 team that Gnome was all wrong??

@null_pointer86: I'm not sure what do you mean - your subj says "Firefox 10 vs Chromium in Ubuntu" and the link points to system menu and settings missing. If you are talking about widgets, yes - they are missing. Don't know why. Gnome 3, although more user-friendly than Unity, is completely different than Gnome 2.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and I gave Unity a try. I spend 2 weeks and change it back to Gnome classic. I was wandering why they took the widgets off from the top menu. I really tried to like/get use to it, but bumping a window into the edge and having it maximize is simply irritating. And, if the window opens docked against the top bar, and you try to move it down, it automatically becomes full screen. Unity needs a lot of work before it's ready for prime time. I'm not ready to jettison Ubuntu, but I'm thinking about it!

Well I held off trying this, thinking that if I waited long enough Ubuntu would realize it was the wrong voyage to set out on, and right course.
However, I thought I had to experience it to make sure. It's not as bad as I thought it would be...it's worse!
I don't see why they didn't use their dev cycles to fork gnome 2 and get irritations out of it, or fix gnome 3. Apparently, they figured everyone would end up using tablet PCs eventually, and figured they might as well force the loyal grassroots into being user interface guinea pigs to be ready for the tablet wave (if it comes to pass).
I didn't want to be one those knee jerk people, but I really can't take this design decision. I'm currently deciding on a new distro. I don't like having something forced on me even if it's worthwhile, and this definitely should have been an obscure ui offering for tablets only.

So long, but half way through the voyage of the good ship Ubuntu, she hit rough seas and poor piloting has steered her into reef, she's sinking, and I'm taking one of the last lifeboats because I'm unwilling to stay and sink with a ship of fools.

This is the last time I updated Ubuntu.
Why can't they just offer the user a choice of which desktop they prefer? Unity may make sense for tablets, but it certainly doesn't for notebooks, let alone desktop computers.
Even worse, the update broke support of my wireless card. I am now spending my free day fixing this mess.
I have been using Ubuntu for years, but if they keep doing this to their users, I may as well go back to Debian, there at least I know in advance things will need to be fixed manually.

I was just about to "upgrade" from Natty 11.04 to Oneiric 11.10, but after reading these comments I have decided it's not worth it. When I first installed 11.04, I quickly became tired of Unity and discovered Classic was my desktop of choice. If Unity is just a workaround in 11.10, the developers are obviously not interested in supporting it. This is not a good sign. Tablets are quickly becoming the PC of choice, leaving us obsolete laptop and desktop users to fend for ourselves.

System wouldn't boot into Unity at all, would just hang. No bar, no nothing. Finally saw something that pointed the way to the KDE login, so at least the system wasn't completely bricked.

Thanks to this blog, I've switched to gnome - but there are still many things missing. Looking for my "minimize all" button, would like to be able to put my launch icons back on the menu bar, can't find the trash... If this were a time-critical system I'd be at the store tomorrow buying a win7 package.. it's that bad. As it is I'll be on another distro by Sunday night or come 0900 Monday I'll be standing outside the computer store....

Unity and Gnome 3 actually make Windows 7 look good. Who is responsible for these abortions? Ubuntu had a loyal user base.

Whether it's Canonical or somebody else, they need to have their heads examined.

Let's see, KDE, Mint, XFCE ...

No wonder Linux has so many split offs. Unlike M$ users, Linux users can think and vote with their keyboards.

Wounded, maybe fatally
Unity is a good example of one thing, that being how utterly foolish it is to redesign someone's desktop technology and then foist it on everyone without making it an option, which people can elect or not, easily and without penalty. Otherwise it is a bad example of _everything_. I followed some instructions from the Ubuntu forums for removing it, and ended up with an unbootable system. Thanks, Unity developers, Ubuntu managers, and helpful Ubuntu forum contributors. I am having a very hard time dealing with this situation. I had been very pleased with the Ubuntu system, planning to assist friends in migrating to it from Windows, but now I think Ubuntu may be behaving a bit like the devil we so gleefully ran to it from. Curses! I have installed 10.04LTS on another drive and am essentially starting over, while still attempting to pursue fixing my 11.10 Unity-spoiled system. I don't know if anyone with Ubuntu/Canonical reads this (I can see them moving away from considering user impact or input at what is approaching the speed of light), but if so, please examine each element of a proposed change and ask "Is this better than what we have now?" There are many elements of the desktop management technology changed by Unity, but I do not prefer the new for any of them.
If we must ask kindly...

OK of-course, Mini's, Tablets may need an innovative initiation like Unity Desktop to compete with Mac and Windows, and even admire Qt with Unity, It is not a bad Idea to get fast into the future market, But still how about Desktop Users and Developers...

Ubuntu should be the bundled with default gnome desktop installation and leave the choice to switch the Desktop. Of-course Linux is always leaving that choice with us and Ubuntu.

My favorite Ubuntu Rocks always, and Unity has triggered an urge for Gnome and Unity

I used Windows for years and well I liked it. I switched to Linux when Ubuntu 6 came out. The reason why I sticked to it was the software package and the clearness of the Gnome Desktop. With Oneiric 11.10 I am thinking of changing to another distribution. Unity is not made for a desktop nor for a working environment. Probably for people who want to use it as their tablet or iphone software but for working it really sucks!

I've been using Linux for about 15years so I'm not averse to change. With Ubuntu 11.10 I've disabled Unity simply to get single-click workspace switching; thereby forgoing the opportunity to discover if Unity is useful. Mixing 'classic' features (menus, switchers, launchers) with Unity would, perhaps, lead to a cluttered screen but allowing users the choice via System Settings would encourage gradual adoption of (best of) the new features.

The Linux desktop has taken a distinct downturn. All glitz and zero function. Clumsy, poorly thought-out UI choices.

Unity may be the most glaring offender, but the same with KDE. It used to be wonderfully functional, but now it gives me useless "features" like being able to rotate desktop icons ... yet they have ruined the tree selector for Konqueror.

It's as if, when M$ came out with its hideous "ribbon" for Office, it inspired all the open-source people to decide that they too would turn everything into a giant ribbon.

No! Stop! Quit adding visually pretty garbage and go back to making interfaces useful!

Thanks,

I take it back -- the majority of the lag was from running Unity 2D. Since yesterday I've been running Gnome Classic and haven't noticed any lag in switching workspaces or in the terminal. The calendar is pretty laggy, however.
So laggy!
10 Wednesday, 19 October 2011 16:42
Braden
The main thing I've noticed since "upgrading" to Ocelot is the speed. Everything's slowed down considerably and its absolutely obnoxious. Simple things like the calendar and the terminal are just plain slow, but they never used to be. I'm using Gnome Classic right now, but whenever I click back a month in the calendar I have to wait a half a second or so for it to render. In Natty I used to be able to go back 5 or 6 months in a split second. Switching tabs in the terminal sometimes takes a whole second, whereas it used to be instantaneous. Switching workspaces sometimes drags on also. Is there a fix for any of this? Maybe there's something really memory or processor intensive running in the background that wasn't there with Natty?
**THANK YOU** (now I can get back to working!)

I don't know if I'm just an old-time "thickie" but I can't figure out how to use Unity effectively. It sure looks to me like one of those things that look great, and demo great, but end up being in the way and slowing you down as soon as you start to use them.

For example, when I hit alt-tab to switch between windows it shows only which applications I have running (a relatively small number) instead of all of the windows each has. Hovering for a while over on of the apps (e.g. the terminal) then shows me all the terminals available. Really pretty, and fantastic demo-ware - but, instead of being able to flick back and forth between windows in a quarter of a second, it now takes me 2s-3s (unless there is a quicker shortcut that I haven't found yet).

Sorry for all the work, but it's a huge mistake to terminate the classic Ubuntu. As a front-end designer I have to tell that Unity is rather 'clumsy' it's not faster to scroll trough all those large icons. Have you guys forgotten the rules of thumb???

Clicking on the ubuntu logo in the Unity Dock:

1: The section dividers on the underside (home, settings, documents & music) are supposed to be on top (remember that this is an extra movement of the mouse, if you decide to choose another section)
2: Your eye has to read from left to right trough all these huge icons and when the app is not there, you have to scroll downwards. So know we are looking up and down too.
3: People do not like it when something is forced upon them and have to learn all over again. Look at the arrogance of Microsoft Office with all their newly implemented icons a few years back, people still don't like it.

All these extra movements are not an improvement at all. Give people a choice to install 'ubuntu classic' like in Ubuntu 11.04 at login, but even that has been removed.

Ok, when it is going to be Unity:
implement a menu structure without the icons, make that an extra option in the compiz desktop manager.
implement an option to scale down those large Unity icons (smaller than 32, because this is still very big)
When you click on an icon, those menu's with icons should size editable, because they are GIGANTIC.

I hope someone reads this, I'm looking at new other distro's right know.

A very big THANK YOU. My poor old machine was struggling with Unity. Strangely, when I first installed 11.04 it said my system could not run Unity and would use gnome... when the system upgraded to 11.10 a couple of days ago it gave me Unity! Your instructions are great, the only other thing I had to do was set my user account to ask for my password as I'd turned that off as I'm the only person to used this system.

You can add the menu from the widgets, it's still not the same though.

Here's how to right click in Gnome, it was changed to alt+right click:

I can't understand why they are getting things worser... Gnome works very well, it's simple and easy to use, but they're bothering a lot of users with this disaster called Unity. What the hell is this ?

I only selected it once and it worked. You have to log out from gnome properly, so it saves your session - I think.

The choice of GNOME is apparently only for this session. How can my choice be saved?
Any ideas? Thx
