Creating desktop application shortcuts in Ubuntu (12.04/12.10)

Print

ubuntu-logo-smQ. I can't create a shortcut on the desktop in Gnome under Ubuntu 12.04 (or 12.10) when right-clicking on the desktop. How can I do that?

A. Some things have changed and the create desktop launcher link is no longer there. One way to create a shortcut is drag and drop the link from the menu onto the desktop. If you would like to use the traditional way, you can do so by running the following command:

gnome-desktop-item-edit Desktop --create-new

The tar.gz is just that - an archive. Most likely you'll have to untar it and compile it from sources and it probably won't create a link to the Gnome menu. If you are in Ubuntu, your best bet is to search for the application in Software Center (or whatever it is called) and install it from there. You can also try finding an already compiled .deb package.
Good luck.

I've downloaded a tar.gz archive of a program and it doesn't have a shortcut in the menu. How can I create one in the menu AND on desktop?
