Find serial number in Linux

PrintE-mail

linux 128Q. I'm looking for a serial number of the system and motherboard (eg. Dell or HP), is there any way to find that remotely?

A. Yes, there is. In many cases a little tool called dmidecode can be used.

Here's the synopsis from the man pages:

dmidecode is a tool for dumping a computer's DMI (some say SMBIOS) table contents in a human-readable format. This table contains a description of the system's hardware components, as well as other useful pieces of information such as serial numbers and BIOS revision. Thanks to this table, you can retrieve this information without having to probe for the actual hardware. While this is a good point in terms of report speed and safeness, this also makes the presented information possibly unreliable.

It should be already installed, if not, you can use the following to install it:

Red Hat based:

yum install dmidecode

Debian based:

apt-get install dmidecode

To get the Serial number, run the following command:

dmidecode -t 1

Where -t (or --type) is the type. There are many other types that can be used:

       Type   Information
       ----------------------------------------
          0   BIOS
          1   System
          2   Base Board
          3   Chassis
