Port 80 Blocked (Windows XP)

Issue: the network is connected, but the websites are timing out when trying to access them with any browser. (Updated)

Solution: The problem is usually firewall related. Things to do:

Firewall

Disable windows firewall or any other third party firewalls installed. These can be AVG, Symantec, Macaffe, ZoneAlarm.

Browser Proxy

Check for proxy settings in your browsers. It may be setup to go through a proxy server that doesn't exist.

If you are using one particular browser, try a different one and see if it works:
- Firefox
- Chrome
- Safari

VPN Software

Check for any VPN software. The Cisco VPN client has a Zone Alarm firewall client and when uninstalled does not properly remove the firewall from the windows configuration, blocking port 80. To disable the firewall, do the following:

1 Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.
2 Start->Run. Type in Regedit to open the registry editor.
3 Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant
4 Click start in the right pane and modify the value from 2 (may be other than 2) to 3.
5 Restart the PC

Spyware Removers

Finally, if none of those things work. Run spyware removers.

I tried a lot of things and this helped me for example.
"You may want to try netsh winsock reset to reset the Winsock Catalog. This will remove some of the low-level antivirus filters."

MANY THANKS for the following tip: there was realy a version of Zone Alarm firewall installed on the PC.

After a restart, the Internet connection (Port 80) was open for about 8 or 10 minutes. Then, the Port was blocked. All other Ports were open.

The only solution was your description:

Go under your internet settings if you are using IE8 to tools then internet Options then to connections and check your LAN settings. Also make sure you have gone to your fire wall and enable HTTP, HTTPs and FTP if they aren't checked.

it tried every things like puting windows firewall off, DNS flush, TCP/IP reset but still the problem is same.
then i restore the system to prevoius restore point then its will working

Hi - she has sent an update about this issue - there was a bunch of other stuff that was corrupted and missing on the system. She said that the reinstall was the simplest thing to do instead of trying to find out what else is not working.

Hmm. silmilar issue here. DNS works fine, but all major IP stuff (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS seems blocked. I've just disabled the firewall by stopping and disabling the service and then rebooting, but still have the same problem.

I have recently uninstalled Norton internet security which might be causing the problem. I'll report back with any further findings. BTW did you ever get to the bottom of your problem?

Hello, I really love the site and I reference it frequently when I am working on machines for different clients. However, I've got a machine that can't get to any http sites. I read your article on the subject of unblocking port 80 and it seems textbook--he once had the Cisco VPN client installed, he can access https but not http... However, when I enter the registry, there is no entry called vsdatant in the path you specified. This is XP Home, if that makes a difference for this. Any advice on getting this port opened?
